Well, Now we have an Update...
December is upon us... and most of the materials have arrived...

The Oak is of splendid quality, and is now partially cut to size.

...with some of the layout for the carvings completed

I undertook to do the carvings first, -the most complex at the outset... So it was the Lions...  Ah well... here goes.

Stage One: - Transfer the layout from the drawing using carbon paper.. Stage two: - Cut away the surface to leave the outline of the lions standing up...
Partially done using a router, - but then we have to go back to hand tools... carving gouges of all manner of shape and size...

Surprisingly enough, this is not so easy, - getting around all those toenails and twiddly bits with not a lot of space to move... but we got there...

   then we start the modelling....

A sigh of relief was associated with the completion of the first lion...

But nothing compared to the sigh of relief associated with the completion of the last one...

Seen here, I am completing the final Lion head... some fifty hours of carving later.

So there we have it... the Duchy of Lancaster Coat of Arms carved, - in all its Medieval Splendour...
