When using a Knitting pattern, the first row of cuts is made, and subsequent rows are cut in the following manner.
Back the cutter away from the work using the advance wheel, and stop the lathe.
Position the cutter to the next position using the cutterbody guide, and lock it in position with the screw.
Change the offset setting on the control box.
Start the lathe, and when the cutter starts to move, advance the cutter toward the work using the cutter advance wheel.
By observing the 'blur' made by the cuts on the workpiece, make a judgement as to how deep the cuts are. When they are deep enough, stop the lathe to check.
Stop and start the lathe as often as may be necessary to ensure that the cuts are to the correct depth.
When the cuts are to the correct depth, repeat steps 1-6.
More complex patterns can be written in the same manner as the simple ones seen above.
The leaf pattern seen here can be written as:
@ 2.5in diam. 8 Cut Pattern. 2.5mm. round cutter.
Row 1. Offset 0. Set depth to give ellipse length x3, width x1.
Reposition cutter sideways 0.75mm. between rows.
Row 2. Offset 3
Row 3. Offset 5
Row 4. Offset 6
Row 5. Offset 5
Row 6. Offset 3
Row 7. Offset 0
Change cutter to 90degree V point, reposition in line with row 4.
Row 8. Offset 15
