The Maypole is
a major feature village life, as every three years it has to be taken down and
painted or repaired/replaced. This task used to be done by hand - with many ropes
and ladders. A big deal by any standards - now it gets done by Crane, due
to 'health and safety concerns... and with this chore go the
pagan rituals-
-the electing of a 'sacrificial virgin' - May Queen - (she gets younger every year!!) and parades and dancing during the day, - serious drinking in the evening. The Norman Fort is where all the
dancing takes place - it makes a useful theatre.
'Off
the beaten track' is where I am in this picture,- well out of the way bottom
right.
