'Woodshed Mark VII' FULLY MECHANICAL
Ornamental Turning Device in the middle stages of development...
...but currently stalled for personal reasons...
Will index cuts into the work surface whilst the work is spinning at over 500
RPM, just as my previous devices did...
will also cut a
whole circumference
of index positions at one time, - just as before...
and be able to be fitted
to most lathes with little modification aside from securing the control box
mounting shoe... and exchanging the standard tool rest. BUT it also...
Will be capable of indexing cuts at
3, 6, 9, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, and 72 positions around the work piece, (The old RS3000
could index at only 6,8,12,16,18 and 24, the earlier mechanical managed
11.22,33,44, and 66...)
Be capable of cut depths in
excess of 3mm, (The RS3000 could only manage a MAX of 1mm) which would make it capable
of decorating work from 1/2 in
diameter to over 8in diameter,
capable of rotating the
cut positions by 2.5degree increments, so that intricate designs can be
cut, such as these patterns...
and of tracking the
cutter sideways in order to produce fluted patterns; -
As well as this, the new
machine will be almost impervious to variations in speed of rotation of
the work, especially important with variable speed lathes.
and capable of operating
at higher lathe speeds, making decorating work even faster.
The new
machine will also be gentle enough so that patterns can be cut by hand... If
your hand is steady enough...
In short, major
improvements in capability over the previous machines.
Drive to the machine will be
via a mechanical linkage; -
A spindle nose extension of about one to one-and-a-half inches in length with
the driving pulley incorporated on it will fit to the lathe spindle. (This
extension will be threaded as your lathe, so your chucks will simply fit onto
it.)
The control box will fit onto a fixing 'shoe' which will need to be firmly
secured to the headstock casing in a position which allows the toothed belt to drive the control box.
(This is the only modification to your lathe that will be needed. It is
also the only thing that I will not be able to prefabricate for you.)
When not in
use, the control box will be simply removable from its 'shoe'; and with the
spindle extension and pulley removed, your lathe is easily returned to its
normal state.
Further
parts of this dream (that I am as yet not quite so sure about) include
the ability to produce profiled cuts that approximate to the work of a Rose
Engine lathe... If this proves possible, (and I think it will!) this facility will be
produced as an up-grade to the base machine. (Later addition... some
Rose Engine type facilities will be in the base model.
At this still relatively early stage in the development, as yet, I have no firm idea of the
possible cost of the a machine, but am hoping that it will significantly beat the now ten year
old price (GBP440.00) of the old RS3000... for a significantly more powerful and
capable machine...

To make the first pilot batch viable, I need about five serious prospective
users; - I currently have...
UP DATE November. I now have seventeen serious
prospective users. Thank you all, email progress reports will follow.
The Mk VII OTD will never be a high volume manufactured product; I have no
inclination at this time to involve a manufacturer in this project. They
will be manufactured in small batches, each machine will be produced and tested
by me, and will only be available from this website,
If you know of anyone who might be
interested in this new machine, please feel free to have them contact me.
